“To Know Christ and To Make Him Known"

March 5, 2010

Third Sunday in Lent

March 7, 2010

Lessons:

Exodus 3:1-15

Psalm 63:1-8

1 Corinthians 10:1-13

Luke 13:1-9

The Collect:

Almighty God, you know that we have no power in ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Reflection:

Exodus 3 tells the story of Moses, minding his own business, when suddenly his life was changed forever.  Actually, and more to the point, he was minding his father-in-law’s business, watching over his father-in-law’s sheep.  Nevertheless, the point remains the same.  Moses is living an ordinary life, not on the fast track for anything remotely special.

Suddenly, a bush bursts into flame, and a voice issues from it.  Despite Moses’ innate lack of curiosity, he condescends to turn aside and take a look.  The voice says “Moses, Moses,” thus tipping Moses off that this is not an ordinary, run of the mill, burning bush that one might encounter in the wilderness.  Moses understood what any good Israelite would also have known: ordinary burning bushes normally do not speak.  Yet, the voice emanating from this bush knew Moses’ name.  Apparently, to get someone’s attention, God uses the person’s name at least twice.  We see this pattern several times in scripture: “Samuel, Samuel,” or “Saul, Saul.”  Our story from Exodus is an old-fashioned “call” story.  (more ….)

ADULT EDUCATIONAL CLASSES

Sunday Coffee Class

Our Lenten Series, "Facing the Wilderness/Encountering Chaos,” continues with Dr. Fred Tiffany, Dean of Northwest House of Theological Studies and St. Paul 's parishioner.  The class meets in the Fireplace Room at 10:20 am.

Class description: The wilderness is a formative period for the people who are called out of Egypt and wander toward a promised land.  In that wilderness they encounter the chaos of that "in between" time.  They give voice to their fears and questions.  In their voices we hear something of our own.  On that journey they learn something of their identity, values, and patterns for living. Their experience may well inform our own.

In the last two weeks of Lent, the group will view photo images of "The Wilderness." Cherie Renae, professional photographer and parishioner, will help us connect this "in between" time in our own lives.  Come join us for this five-week journey of faith.

UPCOMING EDUCATIONAL CLASSES

REAL QUESTIONS FOR A REAL FAITH:

INQUIRER’S CLASS

Confused?  Perplexed?  Puzzled?  Baffled?  Do you find the liturgy at St. Paul’s beautiful but confusing?  How do I get to know people at St. Paul’s? Where do I fit in?  Why do Episcopalians sit and stand up so much during the service?  Are there any Episcopalians in heaven?  Can you believe anything and still be Episcopalian?  Can you get saved in the Episcopal Church?  Why doesn’t the Episcopal Church have altar calls?  Why do Episcopalians read their prayers?  Why don’t Episcopalians act more religious?  Why do clergy wear those funny outfits?  How much can I get away with and still get into heaven?  Why are there so many hypocrites in church?  These questions and many more will be addressed in our class.

The class runs from April 7 – June 2.  Join us for this lively exploration of faith, beginning with dinner at 6 pm.  The class will run from 6:30-7:30 pm for nine Wednesday evenings. The Rev. Dr. Michael Joseph Hanley, our newly elected Tenth Bishop of Oregon, will be at St. Paul’s on Sunday, June 6 to confirm adults and youth.  To register, contact The Rev. Jim Young at fatherjimyoung@yahoo.com.
